What a Facelift Can Do for You
Dr. Smith performs facelifts to enhance your appearance by lifting and tightening the deeper tissues of the face and neck while smoothing and re-draping the skin. Candidates for facelift surgery are women and men who have:
- Deep nasolabial folds from the nostrils to the corners of the mouth
- Jowls, or laxity and sagging along the jaw line
- Wrinkled, sagging skin under the chin and on the neck
Dr. Smith performs face lift surgery at the on-site Laguna Hills Surgery Center using general anesthesia or intravenous sedation (twilight sleep). Medication is administered prior to the procedure for comfort and relaxation. During the surgery, he will tighten the skin and the underlying muscles of the face and neck. The incisions are placed in the natural creases in front of the ear, hidden inside the hairline at the temple, and behind the ear ending in the hair of the scalp.
The skin is separated from the tissue underneath, and lax muscles and connective tissues are lifted and tightened as needed. In some cases, fat is removed from the chin and neck through liposuction. The skin is re-draped for a smooth, natural appearance and secured with small, dissolvable
A facelift can take 3 to 5 hours, depending on the extent of the correction and whether or not other procedures are incorporated. Most facelifts are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that a stay in the hospital is not needed. Some variations of the face lift use a smaller scar depending on the areas addressed as well as the amount of correction needed. These techniques are known by various names including short-scar face lift and MACS-lift.
Your Recovery and Beyond
You will leave the surgery center with dressings and bandages, which will be removed within a few days. Any non-dissolvable sutures will be removed in a week to 10 days, possibly in stages. You will experience swelling, bruising, and a tight feeling for the first several weeks, but patients report feeling comfortable going out socially in as few as 2 weeks.
You will be advised to protect yourself from the sun as you gradually heal from your surgery. It may take up to 6 months for full results to emerge, and even longer for the scars to fully fade. However, most women and men who have Dr. Smith perform their facelift report that their results are worth the wait.
