Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Many men have an enlarged or feminine-looking chest, and in fact it is estimated that over a third of all men will experience this condition at some point in their lives. Often, the appearance of breasts is a source of frustration and embarrassment for these men. This condition, technically known as gynecomastia, may be caused by prescription medication or a transient hormone imbalance. While gynecomastia may resolve itself after discontinuation of the medication or with hormonal changes that occur in puberty and early adulthood, in some cases the enlarged breasts will remain and need surgical correction. Indications

Male breast reduction is performed to remove excess breast tissue that develops either as a firm button of tissue beneath the nipple or a diffuse fatty change with poorly defined edges. In some cases, both patterns are present. There are many causes of gynecomastia and the cause may dictate the type of treatment Dr. Smith recommends.

The Surgery

The surgical procedure involves either direct excision or a combination of excision with liposuction. Gynecomastia surgery can be performed with the patient under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation (if only a small area of treatment is necessary). In almost all cases, male breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis so that no stay in the hospital is needed. Extreme cases may require additional incisions so that the nipple can be repositioned.

Complications

All operations have some risks, such as swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, a scar and numbness or change in feeling. Specific to gynecomastia surgery, surface irregularity or a change in the shape or position of the nipple are a few of the most common complications.

Postoperative Care

Recovery takes one to two weeks, and most men are ready to return to work at this time. Dr. Smith will recommend an increase in activity during the third and fourth week until full activity is resumed in one month. The removal is permanent unless the offending problem resurfaces.
