Candidates for Combined Breast Augmentation and Lift Surgery

Women who are candidates for this surgery typically have breasts that have lost volume, shape, and firmness. As a result of aging, pregnancy, nursing, weight loss, or genetics, their breasts also sag or droop. By combining a breast augmentation (enlargement) with a breast lift (mastopexy), Dr. Smith can provide women with the cosmetic results they want. Wish you could visualize the end result more clearly? Dr. Smith uses this computer imaging system to simulate the benefits of a breast lift combined with augmentation, even showing you variations such as different implant sizes.

In addition, patients who want larger breasts but are also concerned about overly large nipple-areolar complexes (pigmented areas around the nipples) can have this pigmented area reduced while also having fuller breasts with the combined procedures. A breast lift with a breast augmentation also can provide a solution for patients who want larger, more elevated breasts with smaller areolar area.

The Procedure

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Dr. Smith performs most of his surgical procedures at The Laguna Hills Surgery Center in Laguna Hills, California. The center is a private facility offering a state-of-the-art environment with the highest levels of safety, comfort and privacy.

This combined procedure takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to perform. The design of the incisions will vary but Dr. Smith makes an effort to minimize post-surgical scarring. During the procedure, excess skin is removed and a pocket is made in each breast where the implant is placed. Generally, the breast lift incisions can be used for insertion of the implants. Most sutures that are used are dissolvable and a dressing will be placed after surgery is completed. Patients may shower a day or two following surgery.

Postoperative Care

Patients typically go home with a light dressing to cover the incisions and a postoperative support bra. Any non-dissolvable sutures will removed in about a week. The initial discomfort is usually easily controlled with oral medication. Light activities may be started in 7-10 days and relatively full activity may be resumed about 3 weeks after surgery. This may be different if an implant is used during surgery.

Complications

The most common complications after breast enhancement are cosmetic, including dissatisfaction with size or symmetry. These can best be avoided by good communication before surgery.
