Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Over time, the effects of gravity begin to have an effect on the appearance of a woman's breasts. These effects, combined with pregnancy and nursing can often cause the breasts to lose their youthful shape and firmness. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. The procedure can also reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). Breast implants can be inserted in conjunction with a mastopexy procedure to increase breast firmness and size. Candidates for Breast Lift Surgery

Patients who are candidates for surgery typically have sagging breasts due to past pregnancies, genetics, or aging. Mild cases may be treated with only an implant procedure, however large to moderate degrees of sagging may need a mastopexy alone or with an implant. Patients who have large nipple-areolar complexes (pigmented areas around nipples) can have this pigmented area reduced by a mastopexy procedure. Other patients simply desire an elevated, more youthful breast contour with nipple-areolar complexes of the desired size and at the correct height.

The Procedure

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The design of the incisions can vary but usually include incisions around the nipple-areolar complex, a vertical incision below the nipple, and an incision in the crease under the breast. Most sutures that are used are dissolvable and a dressing will be placed after surgery is completed. Patients may shower a day or two following surgery.

Postoperative Recovery

Patients typically go home with only light dressings over the incision lines and a surgical bra. Sutures are usually dissolvable. Any non-dissolvable sutures will removed in about a week. The initial discomfort is usually easily controlled with oral medication. Light activities may be started in 7-10 days and relatively full activity may be resumed about 3 weeks after surgery. This may be different if an implant is used during surgery.

Complications

The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of your consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare. As with all surgical procedures bleeding, infections, and wound healing complications may occur.
